Home Alone: Don’t Allow Loneliness to Define Your Senior Years

According to the 2023 United States Census Bureau report28% of people 65 and older live alone. This is a far higher number than the rest of the world, where only an average of 16% of seniors live by themselves. These numbers represent approximately 16 million seniors in the United States.

Home Alone

After holiday celebrations throughout the year, millions of seniors find themselves home alone. While many of these seniors may be happy and healthy, and others may have a support system of family and friends nearby, many seniors find living by themselves lonely. This loneliness may manifest into depression, seasonal depression disorder, or a delayed response time in receiving help in case of an emergency.

Even more distressing, the Living Alone With Cognitive Impairment Project at the University of California San Francisco says that 4 million people 55 and over live alone with dementia or other age-related cognitive impairment.

Check In Regularly

If you live close to a parent, grandparent, other relative, or neighbor who lives alone, check on them regularly. Not only will they enjoy the company, but you’ll be able to make sure they are safe and sound. Look for changes around the house. Are they keeping the house clean to their normal standards? Are they taking their medicine regularly? Is there healthy food available in the refrigerator? How are they getting around the house? If you notice changes it may be time to consider senior living.

Start by having conversations with them and including them in the decision. Ask them some basic questions. Include them in the conversation. They may be lonely and enjoy being around other people. It’s better to have that conversation early rather than wait until it’s an emergency situation.

And, our Varietas® Memory Care Program relies on the things we learn about your loved one to comfort and connect with them in a warm and nurturing environment.

Socialization

Socialization is one of our core values. Socialization empowers and encourages residents who may be suffering from loss and depression to regain their zest for life. We encourage residents to get involved and take part in community events and activities.

Studies show that residents who interact socially focus less on health issues than residents who remain secluded. This interaction is also suitable for intellectual stimulation. In most cases, socialization also encourages physical activity. Purposeful interaction with family, staff, and other residents promotes friendships and positive activities for both mental and physical health.
